The History of 'Winter in the Redwoods'

College of the Redwoods--Mendocino Coast campus (CRMC) serves over 700 students each semester. CR offers associate degrees, transfer courses, vocational certificates, GED preparation, and classes to update job skills. At least half of CR's students receive some kind of financial aid.

Winter in the Redwoods is CRMC's annual scholarship benefit. Through this event, CRMC has formed dynamic community partnerships with the local business community, local artists, Mendocino County wineries and restaurants, civic organizations, faculty and staff, and community and student volunteers.

The February 26, 2005 event marked the fourth anniversary of Winter in the Redwoods. In three years, the event has grown from approximately 125 guests during its inauguration to over 400 guests in 2004. Over the last three years, Winter in the Redwoods has awarded scholarships to 112 students, totaling $46,000. Monies awarded have grown each year:

Year
Amount Awarded
2002
$5,000
2003
$15,000
2004
$26,000
2005
$30,000

In 2003, Winter in the Redwoods began to help funding the "I'm Going to College" program for local fourth-graders; and, in 2004, it started a Textbook & Art Supplies Pilot Program.

All monies raised at Winter in the Redwoods go to local student scholarships and educational outreach.
